The committee is exploring ways to introduce some new activities to our club.  After some consideration we have opted for Pétanque, otherwise known as boules.  This game is played extensively in France and is rapidly gaining traction here in the UK. We have now organised a trial game at Cranleigh Pétanque Club “CPC”.  Ian Worley, who is leading this on behalf of the committee, has visited the club and played there.  He reports a most enjoyable and enlightening afternoon.

The date is arranged for Friday 19th September from 14:00 to (about) 16:30, maybe 17:00.  There is a small charge, made by the CPC of £5 per person for the afternoon, to include supply of equipment, use of the pistes and on hand training and advice from CPC members.  To add a bit of fun, your committee will provide a small trophy to be presented to the winners on the afternoon. The CPC will ensure that they provide their own playing members to train us and help as required.

A bit about the afternoon. The game takes place on proper courts, or to give them their French names, terrains and pistes.  Everyone will be equipped with a set of boules and will play a couple of games, maybe 3, which last about 45 minutes each.  Games consist of teams of 2 playing another team of 2 , so four players per piste.  There will be up to 8 pistes available making a maximum number of our visitors of 32 (8 x4 = 32). The CPC is a mixed club and we would encourage you to bring your partners to this event.  Numbers are limited so it will have to be on a 1st come basis I’m afraid.  If there is room then we will open the afternoon to friends and guests too.  It would be great to get to 32 players.   We plan to socialise after the games.

Whilst the game is not too energetic it does require some basic mobility.  You will need to walk from one end of the piste to the other a good few times during the afternoon.

It would be great to see as many members of Godalming Probus Club and their guests as possible coming along to enjoy an afternoon of good company and to learn how to play the game.

Let’s have some fun and may the best team win!
